Green Life Awards 2008
Each year Leicester Environment Partnership makes the Green Life Awards in recognition of environmental action by individuals and organisations across the city. Since their launch in 2005, the Awards have grown ever more popular, with a record 42 nominations made in 2008. New Walk Museum’s Victorian Gallery was packed for this year’s awards ceremony on the evening of 11th March.
The 2008 Green Life Awards Winners
The wide range of green activity taking place in Leicester was illustrated clearly by the three overall winners of the 2008 awards.
Winners Opus Trust Marketing Limited impressed the judges with reductions of more than 11% in waste paper and 4% in month-by-month electricity use – achieved by investing in both equipment and staff involvement.
Coleman Primary School came second overall. The school has taken action on several fronts, developing curriculum materials about water, energy and waste, running a ‘grow your own grub’ project and developing plans for their new nursery building to be ‘carbon neutral’ with the help of walls made from straw bales.
In third place Ruth Harbord showed just how much one person can achieve. Ruth has worked as a volunteer for Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire in schools and the wider community, encouraging people to take up composting, cycling and growing and eating locally produced food.
During the awards ceremony guest speaker Sir Peter Soulsby, MP for Leicester South, followed his thought-provoking presentation: “Can local action change the world?” with the surprise announcement of a special award. Dave Nicholls, CEO of Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire, was awarded a certificate in recognition of his 25 years unstinting environmental work in Leicester.
