Insurance claims against the Housing department
Leicester City Council's Adults and Housing department insures all of its properties and will claim on its insurance in the event of repairs needing to be carried out because of a fire or other damage to the building.
However, the Adults and Housing department does not insure the contents that belong to tenants. We strongly recommend that all tenants take out content insurance to cover the cost of any damage or loss to their personal property and belongings.
Content insurance is available from a variety of different insurance companies. Although the Hosuing department cannot recommend a particular company or organisation, we can offer advice and guidance on home contents insurance should you require it. Please contact your local neighbourhood housing office if you require advice.
Council tenants can make an insurance claim against the council for any damages that Council staff cause to the tenant’s possessions, or to the tenant or member of their family.
The claim form is provided below.

For example, if a Council tradesman hammers a nail into a wall and bursts a water pipe resulting in flooding, the Council will be responsible for the cost of replacing any carpets that are ruined, as the tradesman would have clearly been negligent in this case.
However, there are a variety of other issues for which the Council may not be negligent. For example, if there is a particularly bad storm that lifts a tile off the roof and leads to water damage to the inside of the property (damaged carpets, furniture, clothes, etc), the Council would not necessarily be negligent in this instance, as it could not have prevented the damage from happening.
