This year (2006 - 2007) the City Council will be spending about £50 million on improving, modernising and repairing housing in Leicester.
We’ll be tackling the 'worst first', but we'll also be pushing ahead with the improvement programmes that tenants have highlighted as their top priority.
The money we'll be putting into modernisations and improvements will also make homes more energy efficient, so reducing waste and pollution and cutting fuel bills. We will also be tackling major concerns such as crime and disorder and the lack of facilities for disabled people. It's a balanced programme, looking at the needs of all of our community - young and old, disabled and able-bodied.
In this year's capital programme we plan to:
fit PVCu doors and double-glazing to 2,127 homes
refurbish 1,598 kitchens or bathrooms
upgrade 1,000 central heating systems
re-wire 301 homes
re-roof 92 homes
externally paint 1,300 homes
carry out 1,200 adaptations to peoples homes
replacing balconies to 40 properties
These improvements will help us meet the government's housing decency standard.
More importantly, it will help us bring our housing stock and services into the 21st century.
In addition to the money going in to improving council housing, another £5.5 million will be spent during this next year on housing renovations in the private sector. Money will be invested in grants and other inner-city improvement schemes, as well as home adaptations for disabled people.
