STAR (Supporting Tenants and Residents)
STAR (Supporting Tenants and Residents) is a dedicated support service that is available to anyone living within the city of Leicester. The service is open to:
- Families (including single and teenage parents)
- Pregnant women (including teenagers)
- Older people
- Young people (16+)
- Single people.
Founded in April 2000, STAR employs over 60 support workers who collectively speak 12 different languages. Support, advice and guidance are available for all types of housing-related problems and issues.
Areas in which STAR can provide help and support include:
- Help finding suitable accommodation
- Help setting up and maintaining a home
- Developing social skills / behaviour management services
- Help maintaining finances and claiming benefits
- Help with personal safety and security
- Help establishing social contacts and activities
- Domestic violence issues
- Liaison and advocacy support from a variety of ethnic groups
- Access to local community organisations
- Help buying furniture and other essential goods for the home.
All consultations with STAR staff are free and completely confidential.
All STAR support services are designed to help solve clients’ housing-related problems – while also encouraging each client to eventually reach full independence by helping them build their confidence and develop independent living skills.
The STAR service is ‘service-user led’, which means that all support programmes are based on each individual client’s needs, abilities and personal goals. Each client has his or her own tenancy support worker, who draws up an ‘action plan’ with the client based on their individual needs and circumstances.
STAR services are available for a maximum of two years.
