How to Pay Your Council Tax

There are many ways to pay your Council Tax bill:

1. By Internet
You can pay your Council Tax online at www.leicester.gov.uk/payments by Switch, Solo, Delta, Visa, Master Card or JCB Card.

If your account has been passed to our bailiffs to collect, you can make payments to them on line by clicking on the appropriate link and following the on line insructions.
For Bristow & Sutor payments the link is: www.bristowsutor.co.uk , and for Rossendales the link is www.rossendales.com .

2. Direct Debit

This is the easiest and cheapest way to pay, both for you and us as your bank or building society does all the work.

You have a choice of two dates - the 1st or 20th of each month.

You receive at least 14 days notice of when your bank account will be debited and by how much.

You are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your bank in the unlikely event of anything going wrong.

You can cancel the Direct Debit at any time, so you stay in control. You can forget queues, cheques and stamps.

You do not have to complete a new mandate each year; the same one carries on.

You can print off a direct debit form by clicking here, or ask for a form by e-mailing us at council.tax@leicester.gov.uk or by phoning or visiting us at the following address:

Revenues & Benefits Service
Leicester City Council
FREEPOST (LE985/42)
Wellington House

Telephone 0116 252 7005

3. Standing Order

If you do not want to use direct debit you can pay by standing order, which is easier than paying by cheque or cash. You can print off a standing order form by clicking here, or ask for a form by e-mailing us at council.tax@leicester.gov.uk or by phoning or visiting us at the above address.

Send the completed form to your bank or building society, not us, and remember to set your payment date for 5 days before the due date shown on your bill. This will ensure the payment is received and put on your account on time, and will avoid any unnecessary reminders being sent to you.

4. Debit or  Credit Card

Our secure answer phone service (0116 252 7012) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We accept Switch (Maestro), Solo and Delta debit cards, and most credit cards. Just have your card details and Council Tax account number from your bill ready (it begins "20... ") when you call.

Your payment will be credited to your account usually within one working day. There is no charge or minimum payment required for debit or credit card payments.

5. By Post

Please make your cheque payable to "Leicester City Council", write your Council Tax account number that begins with "20", on the back of your cheque and send it to:
Leicester City Council,
Cash Office,
Welford House,
Welford Place,
Leicester
LE1 6ZH.

Please post your payment 5 days before the due date shown on your bill. This will ensure the payment is received and put on your account on time, and will avoid any unnecessary reminders being sent to you. We do not accept post-dated cheques, and you should not send cash through the post.

6. Post Office Payments

You can pay at any Post Office by completing one of their “Transcash" payment slips. Please make sure you include your name, address and Council Tax account number (it begins "20"). The Council's Girobank account number is 4864751. Please make your payment 10 days before the due date shown on your bill. This will ensure the payment is received and put on your account on time, and will avoid any unnecessary reminders being sent to you.

7. In Person

You can make payments at the main cash office in Welford House. Please bring your bill with you to speed up the payment process for you and us.
