Who has priority?
Everyone who is eligible for a Council property is placed on the Housing Register. Your place on the register is determined by the number of points you have (and therefore how urgent your need is). Generally speaking, the greater your need for housing, the more points you will be awarded.
Certain groups are sometimes given priority whenever a new home becomes available, though no one is ever awarded a new home that exceeds their requirements (a single person will never be offered a two-bedroom property, for example).
Generally speaking, priority is given to people who are homeless or who are threatened with homelessness, anyone living in overcrowded accommodation, individuals and families suffering from harassment (including racial harassment and domestic violence), and people with special health, care or physical support needs.
A summary of the points scheme can be found in the ‘Housing in Leicester’ booklet, which is available from any Neighbourhood Housing Office or Housing Options Centre. The booklet can also be downloaded here.
Other priority groups
Everyone will be assessed and a decision made on whether they should be included into a priority category.
