Climate Change - What's Your Plan?

Climate Change – What’s your Plan?

The earth is warming up due to pollution from carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Most scientists agree that climate change is largely due to human activity, mainly the increased use of fossil fuels. in just a few decades. If we do not take action now then flooding and other adverse weather conditions will leave millions of people homeless and without food.

Carbon dioxide is one of several greenhouse gases which are partly responsible for climate change. Many of the everyday activities we undertake such as driving to work or putting the heating on, produce carbon dioxide.

To reduce the threat of climate change we reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that we produce that is to reduce our “carbon footprint”.

The first step is to use energy more efficiently in our homes and change how we travel. Together these sources are responsible for half of all British emissions of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas.

Climate Change – What’s your Plan? aims to reduce climate change by encouraging everyone in Leicester to plan how they will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide they produce and so reduce their impact on climate change. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is - all we ask is that you make one change and that next time you plan to do even more.

Leicester City Council is writing it’s own climate change action plan which will be launched in 2007.

Climate Change – What’s Your Plan? will also be encouraging businesses to do the same and develop their own action plan.

Over the next few months you will see more information about the campaign with details of what some people have already promised to do.

What ever you do to reduce your impact on climate change you are in good company: Councillor Roger Blackmore, former leader of the council has already pledged to cut out all aeroplane journeys and take all holidays in the UK, apart from visiting his daughter who lives in France - but he shall travel by train.

So what will be your plan? Let us know at mypledge@leicester.gov.uk and you will play a part in making Leicester a better place to live.
