Private Sector Housing Group

Inspecting private rented properties for disrepair and unfitness, the Private Sector Housing Group offers a range of services that are designed to ensure that private rented properties in the city are fit for occupation, are in good repair, and have adequate fire safety measures and facilities for residents.

The Private Sector Housing Group is responsible for maintaining standards in houses in multiple occupation, hostels and residential care homes

The Group is also responsible for the registration of hostels under the local Leicestershire Act to control minimum standards of accommodation for people who are homeless. It also vets property for inclusion on the De Montfort University Accreditation Scheme for student accommodation, as well as carrying out pre-let inspections for Social Services, LeicesterLet Scheme, etc

The Group can provide a range of services to tenants who feel their landlord is failing to maintain a rented property to a satisfactory standard. The Group can instigate formal action against negligent landlords if necessary, carry out works in default, and prosecute landlords for non-compliance.

The Group is also responsible for Gypsy and Traveller liaison; enforcement dealing with unauthorised encampments; and management of the residential caravan site at Meynells Gorse.
