Right to Buy

General Information

City Council tenants have the right to buy their home, subject to certain conditions.

A booklet providing details of the conditions under which tenants can buy their homes is available from the Communities and Local Government website. This booklet can also be ordered in other languages from the same website.

You can visit the department of Communities and Local Government website to obtain further guidance and information about the Right to Buy scheme.

How to Apply

Before you apply, make sure you are eligible - you can do so by downloading the guidance booklet 'Your Right to Buy Your Home'.

If you are eligible and you wish to make an application, you can download the RTB1 application form from the DirectGov website.  You should then complete the form and send it to your landlord.

Title Deeds

Where a property has been sold under the Right to Buy, the Council does not retain the title deeds.

If you have bought your property with a mortgage or loan, the deeds will be retained by your lender.

Your title deeds are important documents. If you hold the deeds to your property yourself, you should ensure that they are kept in a secure place.
