Sheltered Housing

What is Sheltered Housing?

Sheltered housing accommodation is available to council tenants, non-council tenants and Housing Association tenants.

Once an application has been received, Leicester City Council carry out an assessment to determine whether sheltered housing will be suitable based on age and needs.  Successful applicants are then placed on a waiting list until a suitable property becomes available.

Leicester City Council manages 14 sheltered housing schemes across the city, enabling people to live as independently as possible, whilst also receiving the help and support they need in a familiar and friendly community setting.

Sheltered housing officers contact tenants on a daily basis, if required, to check that everything is ok and to see if they require any assistance.  Tenants can also request that sheltered housing officers do not visit if they wish.

All homes are fitted with a LeicesterCare emergency alarm system – this enables tenants to summon help in an emergency, 24 hours a day, any day of the year.

All sheltered housing schemes are non-smoking in communal areas, although tenants are able to smoke in their own flats if they wish. Cats and dogs, except guide and assistance dogs, are not permitted in the schemes.

All flats and studios in sheltered housing schemes are offered on a secure tenancy basis and residents have the same rights as all other council tenants, although sheltered housing tenants do not have the ‘right to buy’ their property.

In most cases the weekly rent and facilities charges are payable to Leicester City Council, although Housing Benefit may be paid if applicable. See our Benefits and Payments section for advice about claiming benefits.
