Opportunities with Leicester City Council

Simply the best - when we’re looking to fill a vacancy, that’s all we will look for. Nothing else matters. In return, we like to think we’ve got simply the best and most progressive employment package on offer anywhere. And don’t forget Leicester is a cosmopolitan, vibrant multi-cultural city set in rural Leicestershire, at the heart of England where there is always something happening. Judge for yourself.

The Opportunities:
Leicester City Council offers a wider range of employment opportunities than any other employer in the city.

Did you know, for example, that our workforce is made up of such diverse groups as civil engineers, building workers, environmental health officers, social workers, teachers, grave diggers, sports and leisure assistants, architects, solicitors and nursery nurses, to name but a few? We even employ a tree doctor!

Of course not everyone is based at our city centre offices. Many employees work out at neighbourhood centres, sports centres, local housing offices, public libraries or at maintenance depots etc., so there are always opportunities to work in different parts of the city – perhaps nearer home if that’s what you prefer.

Quite naturally, as an equal opportunities employer, jobs are open to all and we certainly do not expect everyone to stay in one job the whole time they are with the city council. In fact, we actually help many employees to get on and gain new skills.

And remember, if you cannot work full time, most of our jobs are open to job sharing and there is also a range of part time, standby, casual and sessional jobs.

Finding Out More:
Each year we advertise hundreds of jobs. As an equal opportunity employer, every one of these, except in unusual or special circumstances, is open to anyone to apply for.

Most of our vacancies will be advertised in the Leicester Mercury on a Wednesday, and the appropriate professional/ technical journal will also be used in certain circumstances.

We also produce our own vacancies bulletin - ‘JOBS’ - which lists all the latest jobs on offer. ‘JOBS’ is displayed at all council offices open to the public, including housing offices, neighbourhood centres, leisure centres, all local libraries and at some community groups.

‘JOBS’ is also on display at the main council offices – New Walk Centre – where you can also pick up an application form and details on any vacancy which might be of interest to you.

We’re Here to Help:
We have professionally trained Personnel Officers and our own equipped mobile careers information unit, so if you would like to know more or like us to visit any local community groups or jobs and careers fairs, please ask.

Application Forms Only, no CVs:
The council only accepts applications in response to advertised vacancies and you are required to complete a standard application form for each vacancy you are interested in. We do not accept CVs or keep personal details on file.
