The Fosse Way was built across this land by the Romans.

During the late 19th century the area was developed with factories and terraced housing.

The older housing stock was redeveloped in the 1960s and 1970s under slum clearance provisions.

In the 2000s, many students have occupied the area, and there has been a major growth in the number of pubs and bars.
