Creative Learning Opportunities for Schools, Further Education and Higher Education
The City Gallery provides an active education programme for groups of all ages and abilities. The main and craft Gallery exhibitions are an extremely valuable primary resource – our innovative and popular education programme complements and enhances these shows.
Through interpretive events we aim to increase accessibility to our exhibitions and encourage groups and individuals to engage with the art and craft works on show. We provide a primary resource and the opportunity to produce work inspired by contemporary visual artists and craftspeople.
Groups are invited to participate in a range of creative and informative events that are held within the stimulating environment of the main gallery exhibition space or in our dedicated learning area.
Please contact the Learning Officer on 0116 223 2065 or lisa.jacques@leicester.gov.uk for further information and bookings.
TALKS & TOURS
Exhibition Talks and Tours (accompanied)
Exhibition tours accompanied by gallery staff can be arranged at times suitable to individual groups. The content and duration of the talk will be adapted to suit the age, abilities and interests of each group and can be planned to link with the National Curriculum, relevant Key Stage and school/college project work.
There is a small charge for an accompanied tour and talk, please telephone the Learning Officer for details. Advance booking is essential to ensure availability.
Exhibition Talks and Tours (unaccompanied)
Groups are welcome to attend the Gallery for unaccompanied Gallery tours, research and drawing sessions. Although these are free, it is essential that groups book in advance to ensure that the Gallery is able to accommodate them.
Vocational Talks
Linking in with the requirements of the National Curriculum, we offer a vocational talk and tour of the gallery. The talk explains the structure of the gallery, funding and the vocational opportunities available within art, craft and design. We also discuss how artists are employed by galleries and sustain a living and the many other vocations associated with art galleries.
All talk and tours can be combined with an activity, all of which can be directly related to the curriculum that each group are working to.
Artist Talks
Artist talks are programmed for most exhibitions. These are usually held on a weekday or evening and are suitable for students aged over 16, adults and are ideal for teachers. They offer an excellent opportunity to gain an insight into the processes, ideas and inspirations of artists. Artists tend to prepare visual materials to assist with interpretation. These talks are usually informal and generally last an hour, often including a walkabout tour of the exhibition and question time. All talks are free but booking is essential, information on talks and artists are available in the gallery brochure and on our website.
WORKSHOPS
Teachers Inset Events
These events are especially designed to assist teachers in linking contemporary artists and craftspeople with the National Curriculum and classroom activities. The sessions are informal and generally comprise of a short tour of the exhibition, a demonstration of a variety of techniques and a hands-on workshop for teachers to take part in. These sessions can be adapted to suit the specific needs of a group, please call the Learning Officer for further information.
Gallery led Workshops
Gallery led workshops are run by the Learning staff and complement individual exhibitions. Workshops take place on weekdays – times and duration are negotiable. Although gallery led workshops generally take place as one off sessions, we are happy to arrange a series of workshops when and where available.
The duration and content of the workshops can be adapted to suit the age and abilities of your group members and individual requirements and can be linked in with project themes or cross- curricular work involving numeracy, literacy, history etc. We welcome special needs and disability groups to the gallery and will accommodate accordingly.
There are a limited number of workshops sessions per exhibition so it is advisable to book early and to discuss your requirements in detail. Confirmation of workshop bookings will be made in writing. Please contact the Learning Officer for price details.
Drawing Sessions
Feel free to sketch an exhibit or produce your own unique artwork inspired by the exhibition. We can provide your group with paper and drawing materials. Please telephone to book in advance.
Artist led Workshops
Artists are available to run workshops during most exhibitions. These are charged at artist rate for a half or full day workshop. Please contact the Learning Officer for further details or to discuss particular requests or proposals. Requests for artist led workshops should be made well in advance so that we can book the artist concerned on the date required by your group. This is an excellent opportunity for school groups to work directly with a contemporary practising artist.
Art Detectives
Ideal for large groups visiting the gallery, the Art Detectives activity sheets provide questions and trails that take pupils around the main and craft galleries, helping them to make the most of their visit. A gallery officer will usually be available to introduce exhibitions and work with students on their sheets. A sheet can be sent out to teachers in advance upon request and the Art Detectives sheets can be adapted to suit the abilities of your group.
Handling Sessions
For small groups we can provide a handling session where you get to examine the artworks or craft pieces in our shop. This helps to identify how the pieces have been made, highlighting the techniques and processes used.
