Briefing Note 1

Leicester Shire Young Ambassadors: Briefing Note for Cultural and Creative Practitioners 1

Find Your Talent Pathfinder
2nd July 2008

Leicester Shire Young Ambassadors has been chosen as one of 10 pathfinder projects as part of the national £25million Government programme called ‘Find Your Talent’.

The 'Find your Talent' programme aims to give young people the chance to enjoy a range of high-quality cultural experiences for five hours a week, both in and outside school. This programme will run from September 2008 – March 2011.

Leicestershire County Council is leading the project in partnership with Leicester City Council and Creative Partnerships Leicester.

The Young Ambassadors programme aims to increase participation in cultural activities, encouraging children and young people to determine their own cultural priorities and become more involved in their planning and delivery. Some examples might be a young promoters or young choreographers programme or visits to local and regional performances. It will do this by:

  • Recruiting Children and Young People (or the parents and carers where appropriate) to become Young Ambassadors
  • Using cutting-edge social-networking technologies, Young Ambassadors will advocate high-quality cultural experiences among their peers
  • Establishing a commissioning framework for Young Ambassadors to act as co-producers of creative and cultural activities targeting their peers, families and wider communities
  • Prioritising hard to reach groups in the City and County

What happens next?

Over the next few months officers from Leicestershire County Council, Leicester City Council and Creative Partnerships Leicester will be writing a delivery plan, which will set out what will be delivered over the next three years.  This will be completed by 31 August 2008.

We will then be launching the scheme to children, young people, families, schools, cultural and creative practitioners in September and begin to develop the Young Ambassadors project delivery team.

We are aware that many individuals and organisations around the city, county and region are interested in how to get involved in the programme and benefit from the funding.  Our first priority is to complete the delivery plan and any enquiries will be dealt with once the Plan is agreed and contracts signed, in September.

We look forward to working with you all over the next three years to deliver five hours of culture for every child and young person in Leicester/Shire.
