New Walk Museum & Art Gallery
New Walk Museum and Art Gallery is situated within the historic New Walk area of the city. In 1849 the Literary and Philosophical Society formally presented to the town its various collections, which have grown and developed over the last 160 years into one of the premier museums in the region.
New Walk Museum has been the inspiration for many people including Lord Attenborough and Sir David Attenborough, who pursued their love of art and natural history as a result of spending their formative years as regular visitors to the galleries.
Leicester's oldest museum has wide-ranging collections spanning the natural and cultural world. A family friendly day-out, displays include Egyptians, Dinosaurs, Natural History, World Arts and Leicester’s Fine Art collections.
Changing exhibitions feature works by Modern and Old Masters, African-Caribbean artists and Leicester’s German Expressionist collection, one of the most notable outside of Germany.
The museum offers a range of events from curator’s talks to concerts, Costa coffee shop, museum shop and the venue is also licensed for civil marriage ceremonies with meeting rooms and galleries available for private hire.

A major refurbishment programme of the main entrance gallery is being undertaken this year to upgrade and improve the main entrance gallery of the museum.
The new museum cafe - Costa Coffee is now open offering a great informal meeting place and a chance to refresh after visiting the galleries.

A new museum shop is now open offering a range of museum merchandise, art books and gifts for all the family.
To conincide with the Special Olympics taking place in Leicester this summer, New Walk Museum & Art Gallery will also be offering later opening hours from 10.00am to 7.00pm Monday to Friday commencing from 27th July 2009.

Sunday: 11.00am - 5.00pm
Closed 24th, 25th, 26th, 31st December and 1st January.
