"Nude Study for the Monument to Balzac"

"Nude Study for the Monument to Balzac"
Auguste Rodin.
1893, Bronze,

The small sculpture of Balzac in the Museum's collection is a maquette for a larger monument. In this piece Rodin's interest lay in creating an expressive and natural pose.

This stout figure, portrayed with feet apart firmly on the ground has one arm outstretched, expressing life and energy. Rodin's treatment of the sculpture's surface is also very lively. He seems to have modelled the figure in a very spontaneous way, quickly building up small pieces of clay to represent muscles naturalistically. This undulating surface texture creates an interesting play of light - there are dark shadows and lighter areas - adding to the sculpture's vitality.
