In contrast to the body and background which have been loosely sketched, the face in this portrait is intricately painted.
The viewer's attention is immediately focused on the face which is almost sculptural in appearance; an effect achieved through the clever use of light.
Little touches add to the realism of the painting, for example the patch of light on the tip of his nose. Although the painting is unfinished, the closely related colours draw the image together.
