The Road Under the Effect of Snow
The Road Under the Effect of Snow
Camille Pissarro
1879, Oil on Canvas
Two female figures have been painted walking up the road, weighted down with bundles, struggling to walk on the slippery pavement. Although these figures could perhaps tell a story in themselves, this was not Pissarro's main concern; his interest lay in simply capturing the moment, the weather, light and atmosphere. In the background a horse and carriage has been sketched, giving the impression of movement and enhancing distance.
The Impressionist 'technique' is evident in this image where Pissarro has applied paint in rapid, short brushstrokes to quickly capture a moment in time. Using a strong diagonal composition, Pissarro depicts a tree-lined road with a light covering of snow. The diagonal of the road and the vertical trees create a repetitive pattern, cleverly leading the viewer's eye over the canvas
