Weddings at New Walk Museum & Art Gallery
New Walk Museum & Art Gallery is an approved venue for the solemnisation of civil marriages. This elegant building located on the picturesque New Walk was constructed to the design of Joseph Hansom in 1837. Originally the Leicester Proprietary School, it became a museum in 1849. Since then the museum has steadily grown to become a major regional venue housing local and national collections.
The weddings take place in the newly refurbished main Art Gallery, which first opened to the public in 1876, and has a seating capacity of up to 180 guests. The Victorian architecture and interior design of the gallery is magnificent and the moulding of the beautiful ceiling portrays a colour scheme of cornflower blue and gold which offers an overall feeling of romance to the special day.
The art on display features works from the 16th to the 21st centuries. Showing the brightest and best of the permanent collection, key works range from powerful 20th century artists such as Francis Bacon and Peter Doig and Old Masters to newer pieces by contemporary artists.
The Art Gallery has full access for wheelchair users. Guide dogs are welcome and there is a hearing loop system within the gallery.
The staff at New Walk Museum will endeavour to make your special day a success. To discuss your requirements further, please contact the Operations Manager on 0116 225 4900.
If you wish to see the Art Gallery before booking, New Walk Museum is open to the public Monday - Saturday 10am - 5pm and Sunday 11am - 5pm. (Closed 24th - 26th & 31st December and 1st January). Admission is free.
