Victoria Park

London Road
Situated on London Road, close to the Railway station, and within easy walking distance for the city centre via the historic New Walk, this 69 acre fine parkland has a variety of attractions for all visitors.
How To Get There

History
The land which is now Victoria Park was originally part of the South Field of Leicester, which was enclosed in the early 19th century. Between 1806 and 1883 it was used as the town’s Racecourse. In 1883 the races were transferred to the new Leicester Racecourse at Oadby.

The Pavilion, built in 1948, to replace the original which was damaged during the Leicester ‘Blitz’, has changing facilities for sports as well as providing a recently refurbished licensed Café service for visitors.

There are two war memorials on the park, the most notable of which is the Memorial Arch that commemorates the First World War and was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Peace Walk provides a formally laid out approach to the Memorial and features vibrant flower displays. The second memorial commemorates the American 82nd Airborne Division who were based in Leicester prior to the D Day landings in 1944.

Victoria Park, which was once the home of popular nineteenth century fairs, continues to provide a focus for community and cultural festivities; including Leicester’s popular Caribbean Carnival.
The Park is also officially designated as a park or garden of special historic interest (grade II)

Skate Facility
A purpose built skate facility was installed on the park in May 2001. It was designed in consultation with local and professional skaters and can also accommodate BMX and in-line skates. Located near to the basketball and tennis courts the facility provides a challenging and safe area for skaters to practice and everyone to enjoy.

 

Play areas
Younger children are catered for by two well equipped play areas, which are sited well away from busy roads.
There is a nature area and pond. The park is open and peaceful with thoughtfully laid out pathways through avenues of trees.

Parking and access information
Car parking is available with provision for Blue Badge Holders and there is some road side parking. Access along the tarmac pathways and surrounding areas is user friendly with litter and dog bins and benches around the park.

Bottle banks are situated in the car park next to the tennis courts, and near the Victoria Park Road entrance.

Public toilets are available within the Pavilion, a disabled toilet is located near the main entrance of the Pavilion accessed by Radar key.

 

A quarterly park user group is held to discuss issues relating to the park. These are advertised locally on the park.
