Bring the Olympic Flame to Leicester

In the run up to the 2012 London Olympics the Torch will travel the length and breadth of Britain and campaigners are hoping that Leicester will be on the Torch Relay route.
The Torch Relay is one of the most important events leading up to the 2012 London Olympics. The Torch Relay will take the Olympic spirit to all corners of the UK in the build up to the Opening Ceremony of the London games. The torch will be lit in Olympia and will make an international journey before arriving in the UK.
Leicester City Council Olympics Envoy, Cllr Rory Palmer said, "We will all remember where we were on the day London won the bid to host the 2012 Olympics; I now want everyone to be able to remember the day the Olympic torch came here to Leicester. The Torch will bring the Olympic sprit to the streets of Leicester in the most special and symbolic way, and will be an occasion our city will be able to cherish for a long time. It will provide a genuine once in a lifetime opportunity to inspire our young people and to support all our efforts to realise the full sporting and cultural potential of the 2012 Olympics."
Sports Marketing Manager Steve Humphries added, "The City of Leicester has a fine sporting heritage and a passion for sport that is second to none. As one of the UK's leading supporters of London's 2012 bid and recently crowned European City of Sport - UK 2008 and 2009 Special Olympics City, the Torch Relay would be another fantastic opportunity for all the citizens of Leicester to show the international community that the Olympic spirit of peace and friendship is thriving in our cosmopolitan city."
