Older Adults

Physical activity is essential if we want to enjoy good health as we get older. Regular exercise will help keep you mobile and get more out of life.

Whatever your age it is important to tailor your exercise program to fit your own level of ability and special needs. Most older people, even those 85 and over and people with illnesses or disabilities, can take part in moderate exercise programs and there has never been a better time to take up an activity.

All of Leicester City Council’s leisure centres offer activities for the over 50s. From swimming and badminton to armchair aerobics and a tea dance, there are lots of different ways to keep fit, meet people and have fun.

Not only are the activities designed to keep you fit and active they also provide a great opportunity to socialise and meet up with others.  Some of the 50+ groups also organise outings and holidays together.

To find out what’s on for the over 50s at Leicester’s leisure centres see the PDF brochure attachment at the bottom of this page. Or you can telephone (0116) 252 7339 and ask for a copy of the 50+ Active leaflet or send an email to sports.marketing@leicester.gov.uk

If you are over 60 and live in the city, many activities are free. There is no charge for swimming, aerobic classes, gym sessions, badminton, squash, aqua aerobics and even rock climbing.

This reflects the changing focus within leisure to support the older generation to keep active and highlights that leisure centres are not just for the young and fit, but those with a drive to improve their overall health.

Please note that anyone over 60 who is unsure whether they should
exercise for other health reasons should contact their GP for advice.

For further details city residents should visit their nearest leisure centre.

Take a positive step to improving your health

Although many people know that physical activity is good for them it can be difficult knowing how to take the first steps to becoming more active.

  •              under the guidance of qualified exercise professionals
  •              at a convenient venue in the local community
  •              at a special reduced rate.
  •
For further information or to find out if your GP practice or Health Care Professional is involved in the scheme please telephone (0116) 233 3095.
