Krefeld, Germany
Krefeld, an attractive modern city in the Ruhr area of north-west Germany, became Leicester’s second twin in 1969.
Known as the ‘Town of Velvet and Silk’, its prosperity grew from the textile industry. Now famous chemical and stainless steel works form its skyline, but the town is also environmentally friendly with a big cycle-path network and lively pedestrian zones.
Krefeld’s citizens know how to enjoy themselves: February brings ‘Karneval’, May ‘Flachsmarkt’- a huge medieval craft market - and September ‘Strassenmodeschau’- the world’s biggest street fashion show. Krefeld lies on the Rhine, across the river from Düsseldorf, the nearest airport.
