Carers Strategy

The Adults and Housing Department began work at the end of 2007 with Leicester City PCT to produce a new joint Carers Strategy for Leicester.

The consultation draft of the Leicester Carers Strategy was published on 22nd September and the consultation period will last until 31st December.

The  Bulletins and links on this part of our website aim to keep you informed about the development of the new strategy.

We need to hear the views of carers in the Leicester City area in order to produce a Carers Strategy that is relevant to local needs.

The last Leicester Carers Strategy was published in the summer of 2005. It set out how carers’ lives might be improved in terms of providing information, assessing their needs and providing support.

It also covered involvement of carers in the planning and development of services, and the various respects in which carers need to be given equal opportunities.

The strategy came to the end of its life in 2007, with progress having been made in the development of flexible services and better information for and involvement of carers.

It is recognised however that many carers remain ‘outside the system’ and unaware of their rights.

Health and social care agencies are now faced with an accelerated pace of change as the government moves towards a ‘personalised’ model of service. At the same time, a new National Carers Strategy is available online.

A new Carers Strategy for Leicester needs to take account of these changes.
