Contract Care and Remand

Some children and young people need far more help than we expect even an experienced foster carer to provide. They are usually supported in our community homes or in residential centres outside Leicester.
They will have a wide range of challenging behaviour – this means they can be ignorant, inconsiderate, irresponsible, unco-operative, rude, selfish, unreliable, loud, sulky, negative, unreasonable and verbally aggressive.
They may find it difficult to adjust to social and educational life and they can sometimes be involved in criminal activities.
It is important to remember that these young people are also hurt, vulnerable and afraid. They can feel rejected as a result of past experiences and they may feel pessimistic about the future. Lack of self-esteem and low confidence is often hidden under an aggressive front.
When a young person reaches a stage where they wish to try living in a real home again they may be offered a place with one of our contract carers.
Contract carers are paid a substantial fee on top of their fostering allowance (check for current rates) and undertake an agreed programme of work with a young person in their home.
The programme could include things like trying to support a young person returning to education and encouraging them to maintain themselves and take more responsibility for their own lives.

Contract care is a difficult, demanding, full-time task and will not suit anyone who has young children still living at home.
To apply, you must have real experience of working with challenging young people – possibly through youth work, social work, fostering, or education. You will need a driving licence and your own transport.
Our Remand fostering scheme is for young people charged with a criminal offence who are remanded into the care of the local authority. Like contract care this can be a difficult and demanding task and it is paid to reflect this.
Remand carers are involved in meetings with our Youth Offending Team and will often accompany young people to court, etc.
