Hospice and Palliative Care for Children

Nothing prepares parents for the total devastation they experience when told that it is possible or even probable, that their child will die before reaching adulthood.  Family life as they knew it and expected will never be the same again.

As well as the sick child, every other member of the family will, from that moment, have a range of special needs, which they may or may not recognise for themselves.

The ACT Charter is intended to raise awareness and understanding among all those who come into contact with children with life-threatening conditions and their families.

Above all, this Charter will give children and parents permission to expect and ask for special care and consideration in their struggle to achieve quality of life.

Hospice care, sometimes referred to as 'palliative care', is a term which is intended to refer to the medical, nursing and other ways of relieving the distress of patients with advanced incurable diseases and, very importantly, of providing support for the patients' families

Palliative care is the total care of patients and their families by a multi-professional team, at a time when the patient's disease is no longer responsive to curative treatment and life expectancy is relatively short.
