Individual Budgets
Leicester and twelve other areas around the country have been asked by the Government to try out a new way of arranging the care and support people need to remain independent.
Leicester City Council will be working with at least 100 adults who have learning disabilities or physical or sensory disabilities to try out this new system between June 2006 and December 2007.
At the moment, if you need support you contact our Care Manager or local social work office. The Care Manager will:
- Find out what kind of things you need support with, e.g. personal care or support. This is called an Assessment.
- The Care Manager then plans what services you need. This is called a Care Plan.
- The Care Manager organises the services or care you need.
- The Council pays money for those services - some things are free, others you may need to pay towards.
With individual budgets, your Care Manager will:
- Find out what kind of things you need support with, e.g. personal care. This is called an Assessment.
- The Care Manager will tell you how much there is to spend on your support to meet your needs (and how much money you have to pay towards this). This is the Individual Budget.
- You then plan what services or care you need, with the help of a Support Broker or family or friends. This is called a Support Plan.
- You can then arrange your own support, get help from the Support Broker or ask the Care Manager to do it for you. You can get the same help as you had before or find different ways of meeting your needs.
With Individual Budgets you will know more quickly how much money you have to spend on your care and support to meet the needs in your assessment. You then have the chance to find different ways of getting support and care.
For example:
- Different ways to stay independent, like looking at who helps you with personal care, cooking, or getting about outside
- Different respite breaks to help you or your family who care for you to have a short break
- Different ways to spend your time during the day
