Youth Offending

The Youth Offending Service has one main aim - to prevent and reduce the chances of young people committing crime. The team does this by:
- Making sure young people who offend are dealt with as soon as possible
- Giving information to the courts to help them to make the best decision they can to prevent offending
- Make sure young people understand how their behaviour affects other people especially their victims
- Giving young people who offend the chance to put things right by working for the victim or the community
- Helping parents to care for young people who have offended
- Provide high quality youth justice services for young people to the whole community of Leicester.
What does the service do?
- Supervises young people on bail to encourage them to get involved in positive activities which keep them out of trouble and make sure they attend court when they should
- Works with young people given a final warning by the police
- Attends police stations to help young people whose parents cannot be there
- Provides foster homes or other suitable accommodation for young people who otherwise would be in custody whilst their case is dealt with. This is achieved by working in partnership with Social Care and Health and voluntary organisations such as Leicester YMCA
- Works with young people given community sentences such as Referral Orders, Action Plan or Reparation Orders and Suspension Orders
- Provides a range of programmes for young people to help stop them offending
- Work with young people and victims to help young people make amends for what they have done
- Works with young people to meet their personal needs and the needs of their family by, for example, providing an interpreter if they need one
- Work with parents to guide and support them in finding ways to prevent their children re-offending.
Who is in the service?
- Youth Offending Service officers are a multi-agency group from different backgrounds with different skills and experience
- Many are qualified social workers and probation officers with experience of working with young people and their families
- Some are police officers who have worked with many victims as well as young people and their families
- Some are specialist Education staff sent to the team by the City Council’s Education and Lifelong Learning Department
- Some of them are health workers
- Some of them are substance misuse workers who know about the dangers of taking drugs and drinking too much alcohol
- Some are Connexions Personal Advisors able to help with training and employment issues
- Others are experienced youth workers who know a lot about Leicester and where to find help for young people
- Dedicated Support Staff which enable practical cohesion and effective running of the YOS as a whole. This is provided by focussed administrative support for all managers, practitioners and service users.

- Speaking to your Youth Offending Service Officer in person or on the telephone
- Speaking to the duty manager in person or on the telephone
