School Travel Planning

The School Travel Plan is an agreed set of actions to which everybody is signed up. These actions are all designed to make the journey to school safe, reduce congestion around the school, and also have an environmental consideration.  As this signifies an all-round commitment to developing (Better Ways to School’, the travel plan is the passport to ‘formal recognition’ of your activities.

Children and Young Peoples Services have now set a target that all schools are required to produce a Travel Plan by 2010.  Providing, that a school has developed a travel plan by then this entitles them to a Capital Grant of approx. £5,000 for primary schools and approx. £10,000 for secondary schools.  This is for schools to spend on measures within the school/school grounds to encourage sustainable travel. Apart from addressing ‘Every Child Matters’ issues this can also demonstrate a commitment to becoming a ‘Sustainable School’.

The School Travel Plan can:

  • show to parents the Head Teacher and Governors have done all they can for the safety of their students
  • demonstrate commitment by the school to addressing environmental and community concerns
  • be used to help prioritise local safety schemes and any engineering works to improve the local community
  • attract funds
  • attract pupils – better ethos, safer and more convenient journeys
  • promote school travel issues with parents, pupils and staff
  • Improve chances of planning consent for further school development
  • provide a framework for curriculum links
  • demonstrate to OFSTED Inspectors a commitment to Road Safety, the local environment and improving the health of students
  • involve the Student Council or aspects of Citizenship/PHSE

Below are a number of documents that give more details on school travel plans and how to put them together. If you have any questions about travel plans for your school, then contact Mark Korczak on 0116 223 2104.
