Belgrave Corridor Improvements

Overview
The Belgrave Corridor project area extends from the central ring road to the outskirts of the city. It encompasses Belgrave Gate, Belgrave Road, Loughborough Road, Melton Road, Abbey Lane, and includes a number of residential streets adjacent to Belgrave Road and Melton Road.

High accident rates and poor journey times for public transport were identified in 1998 by the City Council and the then ‘Department of Environment Transport and Regions’ as warranting a specified investment programme to solve these problems.

Achievements
The aims of the scheme were to reduce road accident rates and improve bus journey times. A number of key junctions have been improved along Melton Road, Loughborough Road, Belgrave Gate and Abbey Lane. Inbound bus lanes have been installed on sections of Melton Road, Loughborough Road, and Belgrave Gate.

Significant reductions in accident rates have been achieved and bus journey times improved since 1999 when construction began.

Careful attention has been paid to the design of facilities to improve the quality of the local environment and facilitate journeys on foot and by cycle as well as by public transport.

An expanded public car park has been completed on MacDonald Road to serve local retail businesses in Belgrave Road and renewed traffic signal installations are improving safety for pedestrians and helping to improve the flow of traffic along Belgrave Road.

What's happening now
Work is planned for the Melton Road and Troon Way junction. It is hoped that this should be completed in 2006/07. The aim is to improve traffic flow, reduce accident rates and incorporate cycle links.

What’s next…
Proposals for peak hour bus lanes and Off peak parking proposed on Belgrave Road Outbound bus lanes on Melton Road from Lanesborough Road to the outer ring road were part of the original plan. As yet there is no timetable to implement these.

The results of the project will be analysed by the Transport Research Laboratory. It is hoped that the project will be completed in 2008.
