Aims of the Belgrave Corridor Improvement Project

The Project
The Belgrave Corridor Project is a joint City and County Council bus priority project. It is a three phase project with the overall objective to free buses from congestion, as part of a strategy to reduce dependence on the private car by promoting more sustainable forms of transport – public transport, walking and cycling.

Environmental Aims
The Belgrave Corridor Project proposes that by improving the quality of the environment this will also improve business prospects, improve public health and reduce crime.

The scheme value is £2.5 million and is proposed that it will be constructed over three years. There are three key elements this project proposes to tackle:

  • Bus journey times are the key measurable objective of this scheme. Before the project was implemented the average bus speed was 10.1 mph along the Belgrave Corridor roads. A bus service needs to be provided that matches or betters car journey times in order for people to make a preferred choice of the bus. If this is achieved the scheme will reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the area. It is the overall objective of the scheme to increase the number of bus passengers travelling in the area.

  • Accidents recorded in the area between 1992 and 1997 equalled 274 personal injuries with six fatalities. The project aims to reduce such figures by at least 30 accidents per year. In focusing on safety the scheme also aims to regenerate the area and encourage commercial growth.

  • Pollution is routinely measured in the area. One key indicator is the level of Nitrous Dioxide in the air, which is measured along this stretch of road every month. It is anticipated that with the implementation of each phase of this project, the levels of such pollutants as Nitrous Dioxide will steadily decrease. The scheme aims to improve the quality of the environment in the area by reducing pollution levels and using higher quality landscaping.
