Phase 1 of the Belgrave Corridor Improvement
This included work on the inbound bus lanes on Melton Road, Loughborough Road. It also incorporated the reconstruction of the Melton/Lanesborough Road junction and Abbey Road/Thurcaston Road junction and the construction of comprehensive pedestrian facilities and bus priority.
Research (Phase 1 Monitoring report by the Transport Research Laboratory) has shown that bus journey times have improved and made the vehicle flow steadier along Melton Road subsequently leading to lower levels of Nitrous Dioxide. Future monitoring will also help to monitor accident rates in the area.
A series of traffic surveys have been undertaken since February 1998 identifying the problems with buses and general traffic information. Environmental improvements, e.g: planting trees, along Belgrave road would complete the scheme, enhancing the commercial viability of the area by bringing more shoppers into the area.
Bus lanes have helped to speed up buses, giving them priority at traffic lights and other junctions. Better quality of service on the buses is being implemented through the addition of renovated bus shelters and bus stops. These are being equipped with information and timetables, some of which will be electronic, for easy access and viewing.
