Leicester's Liveability Project

Improving The St George's Area

The Liveability Fund is a Government initiative to encourage local councils to improve their environment. It is all about transforming or creating public spaces that are enjoyable to live or work near, to be pleasant to walk through and to feel safe in.

Following a successful bid, Leicester City Council has secured £3.42 million funding for a Liveability Project in the St George’s area of the City. The project includes better routes for pedestrians and cyclists and creating a public space on Rutland Street between Queen Street and Halford Street. Not only will the changes benefit those who already use the area but it will also encourage others to enjoy that part of the City.

Liveability is not just about creating cleaner and safer environments, it is also about giving local people a chance to have a say on how the area can be improved. With this in mind Leicester City Council will be carrying out a number of consultations to find out what you think before any of the Schemes within the project begin. The information about proposed schemes are detailed below, including the e-mail address you can send any comments or suggestions too.

Halford Street pedestrian improvement scheme

The first proposed Scheme in our Liveability Project is the Halford Street pedestrian improvement scheme. This will be a key route from the new Performing Arts Centre and the emerging ‘Cultural Quarter’, to the heart of the City Centre.  The City Council propose that a small section of Halford Street is pedestrianised, from its junction with Charles Street to its junction with Yeoman Street. It is also suggested that the crossing at Charles Street is improved, and the general footway is made better, all creating more pleasurable surroundings to walk through. It is also planned to re-establish loading and disabled person’s parking bays.
