Main Proposals and Benefits

The aim is to improve accessibility and road safety along London Road
PROPOSALSBENEFITS
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND LOCAL SAFETY SCHEMES
Junction ImprovementsWith new or improved pedestrian and cyclist facilities at key junctions. Additionally, Urban Traffic Management Control (UTMC) system would link traffic signals at various junctions to maintain smooth traffic flow.
Refuges/traffic islands and dedicated right turn lanesTo slow down and channel traffic to minimise overtaking and accidents. Right turn protection for cyclists and car users.
Road Markings and Traffic SignsTo reduce traffic speed, improve lane discipline, raise driver awareness of road dangers and minimise accidents.
Traffic Regulation Order (TROs)To maintain smooth flow of traffic and increase road safety by restricting specific manoeuvres, loading/unloading and parking of vehicles along specific sections of London Road and its junctions.
Improved Street LightingTo improve visibility and safety of all road users, especially older people, women and children.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT IMPROVEMENTS
In-bound Bus LaneIn London Road to improve access for bus users.
Bus PriorityWould provide a competitive public transport alternative to the car. Use of new traffic technology would help to co-ordinate traffic signals along the corridor in order to improve journey times for buses.
Level AccessAt bus stops between Waterloo Way and the City Boundary would improve access onto buses, especially for disabled people and pushchair users.
PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLIST FACILITIES
Cycle LanesLinking bus lanes and side roads in both directions along London Road for easy access and direct route to the City Centre.
Advanced Stop Lines for cyclistsAt key junctions to help cyclists ride ahead of right turning vehicles.
Pedestrian RefugesWill help pedestrians cross the road and protect right turning vehicles.
Toucan CrossingsCrossing for both pedestrians and cyclists.
Pelican CrossingIn London Road and Victoria Park Road near the roundabout will help pedestrians cross the road safely.
Special Needs Facilities at Crossing Points
All crossing points will have additional facilities for disabled people, especially, wheelchair bound, visually impaired and hard of hearing people. The facilities will include dropped curbs tactile paving and rotating device under push button units.
