What is Kerbcraft?

Kerbcraft is a three year National Pilot Network of Child Pedestrian Training Schemes set up by the Department for Transport Road Safety Division.

The Child Pedestrian Training uses the kerbcraft model developed by Strathclyde University and is designed to teach pedestrian skills to 5 to 7 year olds by means of practical roadside training.

It is built around 3 teaching skills:

    1. Choosing safe places and routes

    2. Crossing safely at parked cars

    3. Crossing safely near junctions

Each session is 30 minutes long and each skill takes 4 to 6 weeks to complete.

Children are taught by trained volunteers near their schools.

The schools participating in this scheme are:

Mellor Primary School
St Mary's Fields Infants School
Catherine Infant School Glebelands Primary School
Rushey Mead Primary School
Taylor Road Primary School
Granby Primary School
Holy Cross Catholic Primary School
Queensmead Infant School
Overdale Infant School

We are looking for volunteers who have:

- good communication skills
- experience with children, or parenting/grandparenting
- a friendly and patient character
- a good level of health and fitness

A CRB (Police) check would have to be carried out on all prospective volunteers prior to selection.
