Location of Gilroes Cemetery and Crematorium

Gilroes Cemetery is Leicester's largest municipal cemetery. Opened in 1902, it contains Leicester's main Crematorium which can be found in the middle of the site.

Following a major improvement project in 2013, the Crematorium is now the base for the City Council's Bereavement Services Section. The building contains public toilets and facilities for record searching.

There is a large public car park to the right hand side of the main drive from the entrance on Groby Road.

Services at the Crematorium

All music requested to be played must be from the Wesley music system or arranged organist via funeral director or Bereavement services office only. Live music is welcomed.

Services times are available from 9.00 am until 4.00 pm and each service time is for 45 minutes. This can be extended if required. Seating is available for 85 people, with ample standing room if needed.

For those people with hearing difficulties an induction loop has been installed. External speakers are also available. Disabled parking spaces are available to the front of the building with an overflow car park to the right of main drive.  The chapels are non-denominational, so different religions can hold their funeral services in appropriate surroundings.

Location of Belgrave Cemetery

This is a small Victorian cemetery, just 5 acres, with its entrance at the bottom of Red Hill Way (A563). There are no new graves available here but interments can be arranged in existing graves where there is still space.

The cemetery does not have a chapel, so services should be arranged elsewhere or at the graveside.

Location of Saffron Hill Cemetery

This is our other large cemetery, serving the south of Leicester. Its entrance and exit are both on Stonesby Avenue which is close to the southern Ring Road, Asquith Way (A563).

The cemetery has the general burial area for traditional and lawn graves, a small Polish burial area, cremation plots and memorial roses, a children’s section and the Muslim cemetery with prayer house. The chapel is in the ‘Beaux Arts’ style with large central tower. There is seating for 65 people with standing room. Disable parking is available to the front and rear of the chapel with ample parking along the cemetery’s main drive.

The Muslim prayer house or janazgah is the only one of its kind in Europe to date and our Muslim burial system has become a model for many other providers.

Saffron Hill Cemetery is listed as a Park and Garden of Special Historic Interest (Grade II).

Location of Welford Road Cemetery

Leicester's first municipal cemetery, Welford Road Cemetery lies approximately a mile south of the city centre on the A5119. The cemetery is open every day of the year. There are no new graves available here but interments can be arranged in existing graves where there is still space.

A surprisingly tranquil spot, it is a classic Victorian cemetery with many of Leicester’s eminent personalities buried here and offers spectacular views across Leicester and beyond to the Charnwood hills.

Visitor Centre

This cemetery includes a visitor centre, located by the main entrance. The centre is open to the public on Fridays, and on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and has information, leaflets and a public toilet suitable for disabled visitors.

Welford Road Cemetery is listed as a Park and Garden of Special Historic Interest (Grade II).

Welford road wildflower areas are to maintain and protect a decreasing inner-city habitat and monitor native flora and fauna within the cemetery.

At no time is it our intention to impede any visitor and instructions can be given to cemetery staff, on request, that any area around an individual’s grave can be mowed and left clean and tidy for them.

The entire wildflower meadows will be mowed within the months of June & July after flowering and all cuttings will be removed.
