Welford Road Cemetery contains approximately 10,000 headstones and memorials, consisting of a range of different styles and materials used. Like many other Victorian cemeteries across the country, the cemetery has faced a huge challenge in the management and maintenance of these memorials, many of which are crumbling and unsafe to the public.
As part of the restoration project a number of memorials were selected by the Friends of Welford Road Cemetery to have conservation work carried out on them. Chosen for their historic and architectural significance, the aim of the work is to repair and conserve the memorials to prevent further deterioration.
Another part of the project included the reinstallation of two stone wyverns that sat on top of the gate piers on Welford Road, to replace those that had been lost and damaged through theft.
Memorial Safety work is still being undertaken at Welford Road Cemetery. You can find out more by viewing the Bereavement Services page on memorial safety.
