Leicester City Council will be undertaking an ongoing detailed inspection programme to assess potential hazards posed by unsafe memorials within their cemeteries.
Our cemeteries and churchyards contain large amounts of memorials, some of which may be deteriorating due to age or lack of maintenance.
The Council will make every effort to contact grave owners to advise them of these inspections. However, in some cases it may not be possible to contact owners at their last known recorded address. Where memorials fail the safety inspection, we will again make every effort to contact the owner to give them notice to have their memorial made safe.
It is the responsibility of the grave owner to maintain their memorial in a safe condition, including any repairs that may arise over the years.
We are urging all grave owners to help us make our cemeteries a safe environment and avoid any of the serious injuries or deaths that have occurred elsewhere in the UK over recent years.
The Council must approve all repairs.
