Club Gaming Permit

Existing Permit Holders

The Gambling Act 2005 replaced the former system of registration under the Gaming Act 1968 with two new permissions:- Club Gaming Permits and Club Machine Permits.

The Club Gaming Permit is broadly the equivalent to the Part II registration under the current legislation. The permit entitles members' clubs to offer up to a maximum of three Category B4, C or D gaming machines, plus facilities for equal chance gaming (subject to certain limits) and such games that are prescribed in the relevant regulations.

If you run your club as a commercial club - please see Club Machine Permit.

The expiry date on a permit issued under the old legislation is still valid. However, when you renew your permit you will need to do so under the Gambling Act 2005.

The new permit is subject to a fee, which must be submitted along with the application. The permit lasts for 10 years, and a renewal fee will then apply. Holders of a permit will be required to pay an annual fee.

New Operators

If you wish to apply for a new permit, you will need to make an application to Leicester City Council for the appropriate permit under the 2005 Act.

Application forms enabling you to apply for your permit can be found by using the link at the left of this page.

High Turnover Bingo

Providing bingo played on the premises does not exceed £2000 in stakes or prizes in a seven day period (this is known as 'high turnover bingo'), it can be provided as an exempt (equal chance game). However, if high turnover bingo is played, the club will have to:

  • a) notify the Gambling Commission, and

  • b) if, at the end of seven days, it wants to continue to offer high turnover bingo in the following twelve months, it must obtain a bingo operating Licence from the Gambling Commission.
