Private Hire/Hackney Carriage Vehicle Drivers

Any person driving a licensed vehicle in Leicester City must be licensed as a Private Hire/Hackney Carriage Driver.

The Licensing Section has a duty to ensure that licenses to drive hackney carriages and private hire vehicles are only granted to 'fit and proper' persons.

In order to establish an applicant's suitability to be licensed as a driver, the Licensing Section requires:

  • an enhanced criminal record check
  • a medical examination
  • a topographical knowledge test of Leicester City
  • a practical driving test with the Driving Standards Agency - specifically aimed at taxi driving
  • a spoken English assessment

The applicant must have held a full British Driver's Licence for at least 12 months.

  • The Application Form and other necessary documents for applying for a vehicle drivers licence, will be available shortly. In the meantime information can be obtained by contacting the Licensing Section on 0116 252 6326.
