Residents are now able to recycle their used
cooking oil free of charge at Leicester City’s
Community Recycling Centres.
The collection tanks, installed at Bridge Road and Islington Street (Freemen’s Common), can hold 1,000 litres, which will produce sufficient electricity to power one average household for a whole year.
Councillor Sarah Russell, cabinet lead for the environment, said: “This new facility will be fantastic for the environment and will provide us with yet another way to reduce our carbon footprint."
It is important that we recycle the oil, as it can be hazardous to wildlife if it is allowed to seep into the water table through being poured down the sink.
Just one litre of used cooking oil can be converted into a new green fuel called LF100 and produce enough clean electricity to make 240 cups of tea.
