Real Nappies

Real nappies

An average child will use 3,500-4,000 of disposable nappies over an average two and half year period. In Leicester 9,500 births are registered annually which means we have around 18,000 children in nappies. Every week Leicester’s recycling plant processes around 84 tonnes of soiled disposable nappies, some of which still goes to landfill.

Real Nappies are washable alternatives to disposable ones. Using washables can reduce the amount of nappies disposed of in Leicester. To help save energy and water try to use A-rated appliances, wash in full loads at max. 60°C and avoid tumble drying nappies. Real nappies can be cheaper than disposables and you can save even more money if you re-use them on a second child.

Leicester City Council runs its Real Nappy Lending Kit Scheme to encourage parents and carers to trial real nappies as an alternative to disposables. Real nappy lending kits are available in different sizes for a two-week trial period. Our friendly nappy advisors are happy to give advice and help to choose the best solution for you and your baby.
