When you are newly elected there will be an induction training period when you can attend several induction courses.
If you are a member of a political or other group there could be training and support from your political group.
The training programme provided by the Council is decided by the Members Development Forum and
will include:

dealing with constituents’ enquiries

Data Protection and Freedom of Information Acts

probity and integrity

speaking in public

ethical conduct for members

IT training

website editing (no prior knowledge required)

tour of departments

Elected Members’ Mentoring Scheme: Councillors who wish to join the scheme will be linked to a senior officer within the Council who will be best able to meet the needs of the councillor and ableto share his or her knowledge with a first timecouncillor

councillors can also request Personal Development Plans to identify individual training needs. This will be a confidential statement of your skills and training. The Plan will help you to recognise and value the skills, knowledge and experience you already have, and will help you make informed decisions about your future training and information needs
