ImpleMENTOR - Good Practice in Leicester

A STAR-STUDIED CAST!
Helping with homework is one of the ways Learning Mentors in Leicester are helping students to do better in school.

One example of this is the Study Club at English Martyrs School.

There, students may use the School’s Library to do work after school. They have support from Learning Mentors and the Librarian, and access to books and computers.

Students are given stars for achievements like keeping a record of homework in their diaries, working quietly for at least 30 minutes, making good progress on homework set, presenting work well, and sensible use of the Internet and printer.

The more stars a student earns the higher the reward. Students can gain certificates – ranging from bronze to gold standard – and if they do really well can merit a book token.

Students at English Martyrs are clear about the benefits to them. Their comments about why they like Study Club include:

“We get peace and quiet and somewhere to go after school.”

“I cannot go on the Internet at home.”

“(Without Study Club) it would take me longer to get my homework done because I get distracted at home.”
