City School Students Celebrate A-Level Results

STUDENTS from Leicester's four school sixth forms were today celebrating as they received their A-Level results.

Around 20% of those entered got an A* or A grade – an increase of 3% on last year’s figures. The percentage of students achieving grade C or above was also slightly higher than last year.

Overall, the number of candidates sitting A-Levels in city school sixth forms this year was up by 8% on 2009.

Once again, the City of Leicester and English Martyrs maintained high pass rates with 99% of students entered for A-Levels at both schools passing.

All A-Level exams entered at New College were passed, with a significant increase in the number of pupils sitting the exams as well.

Overall the Leicester City schools A-Level pass rate was above the national average.

In addition to A-levels, many pupils in our schools have had success with Levels 2 & 3 vocational qualifications.

Cllr Vi Dempster, Leicester City Council cabinet lead for children and schools, said “I am really pleased that not only have we yet again exceeded the national pass rate but that a higher number of students are entering the exams in the first place, which is a tribute to the hard work of both the teachers and students in Leicester City’s schools”.

Rachel Dickinson, strategic director, children at Leicester City Council agreed “Historically, we only have a small number of schools that offer A-Level with a lot of students going on to sixth form colleges in the city to study.

“But year on year we are demonstrating really good results for an increasing number of students, and exceeding the national average pass rate. This is fantastic news for Leicester and for all the students who will be celebrating today.”
