Since our original communication on this issue, ESPO have arranged DNA testing on a range of meat products which have all tested negative for contamination with equine DNA or pork in halal products.
DNA testing will now be embedded in the supply chain monitoring of all foodstuffs.
How much do school meals cost?
A two course school meal costs just £1.75 for a primary pupil and £2.05 for a secondary pupil. Why not ensure your child has a healthy, nutritious two course school dinner.

How do I pay for my child’s meal?
You can pay for your child’s meal by cash or cheque. Please contact your child’s school for more information. If you think your child might be entitled to free school meals contact the council on 0116 252 7009 for more information or visit: www.leicester.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals

There is not a kitchen at my child’s school. How does this affect their school dinner?
If there is not a kitchen at your child’s school, don’t worry. Your child’s meal will be freshly prepared at another city school and delivered hot and ready to eat.
My child is allergic to egg / wheat / dairy products – Can he / she still stay for a school dinner?
Yes, your child can still have a school dinner. We would ask that you or your child ’s dietician contact City Catering with your child’s medical referral. We can then arrange for an appropriate menu for your child. For more information contact City Catering on 0116 233 3038.

Gluten Free!
From January 2012 the rules on making claims about gluten free in food is changing.
What is City Caterings policy on nut allergies?
We do not knowingly use any nut products or products derived from nuts in our kitchens. However we cannot guarantee that our food is free from nut products. If your child does suffer from a nut allergy please contact City Catering on 0116 233 3038 and our dietician can create an appropriate menu.
Can my child’s school provide multicultural meals?
Yes, City Catering offers meals to suit cultural requirements. We have an Asian vegetarian menu and a halal menu. For more information contact the catering team on 0116 233 3038.
Can my child’s school provide a vegetarian meal?
Yes, a healthy and tasty vegetarian option is available at each city school on a daily basis.
Why does my child’s school have to follow the new government guidelines?
The government has set out strict guidelines that all councils must now follow when preparing food for children. Leicester City Council follows these guidelines strictly and by doing so provides city children with a healthy tasty meal each school day.
