What is "BSF"?

Beaumont Leys is one of the first BSF schools in Leicester

Building Schools for the Future, or "BSF" is the largest capital investment programme for 50 years. BSF is not just about bricks and mortar: it is about people. It is about transforming the face of education for generations to come, providing learning environments in which every young person can unlock their talents and achieve their very best. It will build better futures for all of our young people, the teaching profession and the wider communities that they serve.

BSF will

  • Create school environments in which young people feel engaged and believe in themselves.

  • Provide teachers with world-class learning environments in which they too feel valued and inspired.

  • Root schools in the centre of their communities so that they become hubs that help re-vitalise areas

Leicester was one of the first areas in the country to become part of Building Schools for the Future (BSF) and has now entered the second phase of its programme. Through BSF, Leicester City Council has been awarded more than £235million to rebuild or remodel every secondary school in the city. This will provide a 21st century learning environment that will help engage and inspire pupils, staff and people in the community.

Leicester City Council and its partners have recently launched their vision to transform Leicester into Britain’s sustainable city over the next 25 years. BSF and the associated Strategy for Change are an important element of our delivery plan. Strategy for Change sets out our vision for Secondary Education and our plans for investment through the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

For further information the council has also put together a Resources page.

Ultimately, Building Schools for the Future is about making a real difference to the life chances of all young people by giving them the best possible start, no matter what their background.
