The original School and Sixth Form Centre were formed when the Spencefield School and the City of Leicester School amalgamated in 1985. In 1996 the school was organised into subject suites to improve efficiency and this arrangement has proved very successful and contributed to the improvements in teaching and learning noted by Ofsted in 2000.
In 2000 the school became involved in the ‘Excellence in Cities’ programme this brought significant extra funding and in 2001 the school began a programme of investment in the ICT infrastructure and the rapid expansion of the ICT facilities
The year 2003 was one of the most successful years for the school in other ways as the college achieved a DfES ‘Achievement Award’ and gained ‘Career Mark’ status. In 2004 a new Head Teacher was appointed and the college was named as one of the secondary schools to be significantly re-modelled as part of the DfES ‘Building Schools for the Future’ initiative. In addition to this plans to build a new community sports hall using a grant from the New Opportunities Fund were announced. As the college enters this next stage of development we are looking forward to having all our buildings on one site, with the swimming baths and sports hall integrated into the design able to meet the needs of an extended learning community.
Specialism
In 2002 the school applied for Specialist School Status. From 1 September 2003 The City of Leicester School became an 11-18 designated Business and Enterprise College.

Current Status
As part of the joint PFI funded project (with Crown Hills Community College), both schools are starting on site in April 2012. The projects are due to be completed by Autumn 2013.
