Learning Services Division
The primary focus of the work of the Learning Services Division is on raising standards in all schools. This is a formidable challenge for the City but one that is essential if the City is to continue to develop and prosper. As an education service we are capable of more. High aspirations and expectations are essential.
Our role is to challenge, intervene and support. Appropriate and effective challenge should be perceived as supportive. Challenge needs to be based on objective evidence and much has been done to improve the quality of data available to schools and the Division. From this starting point there can be a professional dialogue with all schools in the City to facilitate each establishment examining its strengths and areas for further development. From this base appropriate strategies can be agreed to bring about further school improvement.
All schools, no matter what phase they cater for, need to accept that diversity is the norm. Within a multi-cultural, multi-faith community which serves a variety of socio-economic areas, there is a richness of experience and an opportunity for individuals to learn from each other. Part of the work of the Division is to ensure that harmony is promoted and all achieve to their maximum potential. Whilst school and Local Authority targets are important they should not mask the essential task of ensuring that each individual gives of their best. All need to attain the highest level and where appropriate gain external accreditation for their efforts. The process of education impacts directly on their life chances. As all pupils must spend a minimum of 15,000 hours in the classroom throughout their school career, they deserve the very best; not only in terms of achieving at the highest level, but also of having the benefit of a broad and balanced curriculum which prepares them well for life. Part of the function of the Division is to ensure that educational experiences are planned and delivered in a consistent and coherent fashion that maximises the benefits for all.
The work of the Division is dependent on efficient and effective teamwork. This involves everybody working together - administrative and clerical staff, advisors, consultants, project leaders and inspectors.
