There are currently approximately 350 children in the
City, aged between birth and sixteen years, with a significant permanent, or
long term fluctuating, hearing loss.The Team is involved at some level with all
these children from diagnosis to leaving school.
Children and Families are supported at various
levels by specialist qualified peripatetic teachers. This support takes
place at home, in a variety of pre-school settings, mainstream schools and
special schools, as appropriate.
The vast majority of children are educated in their local
mainstream school.
We support children at all stages of the code of practice
who have an educationally significant hearing loss.
We provide a range of services including;
- direct support to families from initial diagnosis ,
through to leaving school with an understanding of the hearing loss, it's
implications and it's management.
- Direct teaching
- Audiological management
- INSET packages for teachers, teaching assistants and a range
of other professionals
- A small number of children attend the Royal
School for the Deaf in Derby
